Last and final day of the trip.Today we decided to first see some local temples in Kumbakonam in and around the hotel where we were staying .Kumbakonam is full of temples. Every street, road, locality has a prominent temple.Infact I would say that Kumbakonam is a spiritual paradise
First temple we visited was Kumbeshwara temple .

It is famous temple of Kumbakonam situated in a busy street. The rajagopuram looks great and it is rich in heritage. The main idols of the temple are Adi Kumbeswarar, Sri Mangala Nayaki, Lord Ganapathi & Lord Muruga .

The story behind this temple is that ,When it was time for the destruction of this world a huge Pralaya (heavy floods) came up. In order to save Living creatures, (Lord Brahma collected all these things and put them in a mud pot and kept the pot on top of the Meru parvatham (Mount Meru)

During floods the pot got washed away and came to a particular spot.Lord shiva in the form of a hunter Broke the pot and the contents got mixed with sand and formed the Linga. This Linga is called kumbeshwarar. The goddess here is called sri Mangala Nayaki and because the deity shines at the mantra peeta ,one of the distinguished Sakthi peetas, the deity is famous as Sir Mantra Peeteswari.

This linga is swambumoorthi and it is conical in shape. At the entrance of the Arthamandapa the sentinels - Dhwarapalakas - Chandi and Mundi stand in vigil on either side. Vinayaka of this shrine is called Adi Vinayaka as he is supposed to have reached this place even before Lord Shiva and the goddess

Kumbeshwara temple
Next temple that we visited was Chakrapani temple.

Chakrapani temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The main deity is Chakraraja and the goddess here is Vijayavalli Thayar. The temple is well known for its Exquisite pillars. The presiding deity is seen here with eight arms each arm having a weapon.
The temple is noted for its exquisite pillars. The presiding deity, Chakrapani is sported with eight arms, each having a weapon
As per Hindu legend the sudarshana Chakra ), the discus, is the most powerful weapon of god Vishnu. Once he had sent his weapon to kill king Jalandasura. The weapon is believed to have come out through river Kaveri Lord Brahma who happened to see this got impressed and installed the image of Sudarshan in the place where the temple is now located

The next temple was Srangapani temple which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Sarangapani is the largest Vishnu temple in Kumbakonam and has the tallest temple tower in the town.
It is of great religious significance and considered to be second only to the Srirangam Temple in Trichy.
The main deity of this temple is Sri Sarangapani and he is also known as Aara Amudhan,. Sarangapani is shown in the Udhyoga Sayana posture as if he is getting up from a reclining position
Sarangapani’s (Lord Vishnu) consort is known as Komala Valli Thayar and has a separate shrine.

sarangapani temple

Our next temple was Garbharakshambika temple at Thirukavvukavur. The first time I had heard about this temple was when I was pregnant. As I had a very difficult pregnancy I remember one of our friends suggesting that we send money to this temple and ask for the oil which is to be applied on the abdomen for safe pregnancy. My father had sent money to the temple and got the oil

So I was very happy to be visiting this temple.

This is a shiva temple where the Shiva lingam of the presiding deity, Lord Mullaivana nathar in the main sanctum of this temple is a Swayambu (self-manifested ) Lingam.

As this place was earlier covered with jasmine forest (jasmine in Tamil is Mullai and Forest in Tamil is Vana) the name Mullaivana nathar.

The goddess here is Garba Rakshambika ( karu Katha Nayaki which in English means savior of the featus).

The story behind the temple is that, thousands of years back, two sages Gowthama and Gargeya did penance in this forest. A couple by the name Nithuvar and his wife Vedhika stayed in the same place and rendered services to these sages .As the couple did not have any children , the sages advised the couple to worship Goddess parvathi. The couple did that with intense devotion and their prayers got answered and Vedhikai conceived.

One day when Sage Nithuvar was away, sage Urdhvapada visited the mullai garden. Vedhikai was tired and sleeping deeply as she was pregnant and hence could not show proper hospitality to the sage. But Urdhvapada unaware of her difficulties got angry and cursed her. The curse made her sick and also affected the foetus(child in the womb) She prayed to Goddess Parvathi who took the avatar of Garbarakshambigai and appeared before Vedhika and protected her child in a pot for the remaining pregnancy period and handed over the healthy child at the end of the period. Thus the goddess then came to be known as Garba rakshambikai or Karu katha nayaki
Many pregnant women visit this temple and seek the blessings. They are given oil which is applied to the abdomen during pregnancy to have a good healthy child
The temple is spread over a wide expanse of land with huge towering Gopurams and a beautiful water tank in front of it. The whole atmosphere is very calming, peaceful and serene

Our next and final temple was the Airavateswara temple, located in Darasuram
Airavateswara temple, located in Darasuram near Kumbakonam, was built by Rajaraja Chola. Airavateswara temple stands out for its intricate, beautiful scriptures.
This temple along with the Brihadeeswara templeat Thanjavur and the Gangaikonancholiswaram at Gangaikonda Cholapuram are collectively known as the Great living Chola temples, which have been recoginized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site
This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Airavata, Lord Indra’s elephant, was cursed by Sage Durvasa for disrespecting him. As a result the spotless white elephant ended up with skin discoloration, which was cured only after Airavata took a dip in the sacred waters of this temple.
The temple and the presiding deity derive its name from this incident. As originally Airavata worshipped the Lingam, the Lingam is named after him as Airavateswara. The Goddess in this temple is known as Deva Nayaki. The steps, in the fenced enclosure, produce musical notes when tapped and each step emits a different tone of the musical scale
The temple is a treasure trove for art and architecture. The numerous carvings depict not only the gods and their stories but also daily life as witnessed in those days. There are depictions of the Bharatanatyam poses and gymnastic poses

All in all It was a lovely trip.Even though we visited many temples we could see the temples at leisure and have good darshan at all places.Frankly there are no dearth of temples in Thanjavur District and Kumbakonam alone has over 100  temples. Hence we certainly could not cover all temples but made an attempt to visit few important temples.

Thirupampuram-Rahu Kethu temple is one of the oldest temples of Lord shiva and is situated in Mayavaram.Rahu and kethu are present as a single entity in this temple. The leading deity is seshapureeswarar/Pampuranathan with his consort vandarkuzali.people who suffer from Sarpadosha do worship here to relieve of the dosha. Mythological belief is, that God is living in the form of snakes
As per legend once Lord Ganesha was worshipping Lord Shiva at Kailash.   The snake which was in Shiva’s neck thought that Ganesh was worshipping him and he started to feel. When Shiva understood the thoughts of snake he cursed that all the Naga’s in the world including Aadhiseshan, Raghu and Kethu will lose their powers.  Hence Aadhiseshan and Rahu and Kethu lost their importance and they suffered.  To get cured from Shiva’s curse they prayed to him.  Shiva accepted their request and asked them to worship him at Thirupampuram.

Rahu_keth

From here we proceeded to see Goddess Lalithambika Temple at Thirumeechiyur

The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Meghanatha. The consort of Lord Meghanatha is Goddess Lalitambika. The story behind this temple is that Karththuru, vinathai are the two wives of kashyapa maharishi. They had a fight in between them about the black spot on the tail of Indra’s horse. Repenting they came to Thirumeeyachur and worshiped the Lord. The Lord blessed them and gave them an egg each, asked to preserve for a year to gets sons. They got Garudan and Arunan Respectively

Once arunan took the form of mohini a charming girl, the sun god harmed her. When Arunan prayed to the Lord, he cursed the sun that he would become dark. To come out of this curse sun worshiped the Lord at Thirumeechiyur for seven months. But as there was no change he started screaming and the this noise made the Goddess angry as the sun was shouting in their abode and was about to curse him.
The God pacified her saying that  sun was  already under a curse and was looking for relief.(This Pacifying scene is depicted by the sculpture in the temple where  In one angle the sculpture of the goddess appears to be in anger on the other angle you can see a smile).Since Shiva himself pacified the goddess, the angels called vasini emerged from the mouth of the goddess and sang 1000 holy names in praise of her which came to be known as Lalitha Sahasranamam.

The priest there narrated one interesting incident about this temple. It seems a devout lady kept getting recurrent dreams about Lalitha Devi, who kept asking her to make a pair of anklets and offer it to Devi. The lady was confused, as she was not even aware of the existence of any such temple. Eventually, she made anklets and somehow located the temple and reached there with the anklets. Now the temple authorities were shocked. The Goddess statue was made of a single stone, and hence there was no provisions to accommodate the anklets, which go around the ankles. But to everybody’s surprise, upon close inspection, they found a small parting in the space between Devi’s feet and the stone seat through which they slipped the anklets.
Since then, it is common to offer anklets to Devi here.

Next temple on the list was the  Navagraha temple for Lord Shani at Thirunellar
The presiding deity is Lord Shiva as Darbaranyeswarar and is believed to be made of dharba grass which is considered as the holy plant and his consort is Bhogamartha poon Mulayal or Praneswari.Lord Shani or Shaniswarar is also worshipped here and is treated as the door keeper of the temple. The tradition is to worship Lord Shaniswarar first before entering the main sanctum of Lord Shiva.
According to myths, King Nala was once affected with innumerable problems due the adverse effects of Shani Dosha.
The king took a holy dip at the Theertham, a water tank in the temple, and got relieved of all evil effects. This theertham came to be known as Nala Theertham and many people have a dip in the holy water here and throw away the old clothes. According to the epics and legends the planet Saturn houses itself in each Zodiac sign for seven and half years and this is considered as a troublesome time for the individual who going through that phase. So praying to Lord Shani in this temple is believed to remove the difficulties.
The temple was pretty crowded but we did archana for all our family members and also paid money for continuous archana for 1 year.

Thirunellar

After finishing our poojas we moved to visit the next temple at Thiruvengadu which houses the Navagraha temple for Lord Budha,It goes by the name of Swetharanyeswarar Temple. This temple is located in the town of Thiruvengadu near Sirkazhi and is around 28 kms from Mayavaram.

The unique feature of the temple here is that there are three murthys, three Sakthis, three sthala vrikshams (holy tree), Vilvam, Vadaval and Konrai and three holy tanks, Agni theertham, Surya theertham and Chandra theertham.

The temple represents a unique incarnation of Lord Shiva -Agora Murthi who is the main deity and his is consort Brahma Vidya Ambal. The story behind this temple is that an asura known as Marutwasura was disturbing the Rishis and the people of Thiruvenkadu. He had received the power of invincibility from Lord Brahma. The individuals prayed and appealed to Shiva who sent Nandi (Bull) to battle the Asura. In the battle that ensued Marutwasura was crushed by Nandi and tossed into the ocean. But arutwasura through his penance acquired a Trishula (Trident) –from Lord Shiva.

The asura then came back with more force to disturb the people. At the request of the devotees, Lord Shiva sent Nandi once again to destroy the asura. Nandi couldn't battle the devil as the asura had the Sula of Shiva. The asura inflicted wounds on Nandi's back with the Sula. A furious Shiva took the form of Agoramurthi and opened his Third Eye to destroy Marutwasura.

In the left side of the ambal mandapam there is a separate shrine for Lord Budhan (Lord Mercury).Budhan is said to be the one who does good deeds.

Our next visit was the temple at Thirukadaiyur. Most of the temples are known either by the name of the Lord or his Consort. For Example, Madurai reminds us of goddess Meenakshi, Chidambaram for Lord Nataraja etc However, there are a few temples that are well-known for the Lord and his Consort and Thirukkadaiyur is one among them. In this temple Shiva is in the form of Kalantaka (Destroyer of Death) and his wife goddess Parvathi as Abhirami .This temple is associated with the legends of Markandeyar and Abirami Battar.
It was in this temple Lord Siva is believed to have vanquished Yama, the God of death and destruction to save the life of Markandeya and bestowed immortality on him. Since Death was conquered at Thirukkadaiyur, we can see couples celebrating their shastiabdapoorthy, completion of 60 years and Sadabishekam (completion of 80 years) to pray for long life.
Meanwhile, as Yama was rendered inactive, there were no deaths happening on earth, but people were still being born. So Burdened by the weight of so many people the earth, goddess, Bhuma devi appealed to Shiva for help. Shiva, hearing the plea of the goddess, released Yama, allowing death to occur again. However, in order to remind Yama that he should not kill anyone while they are worshiping Shiva again, the image of Shiva in this temple is depicted with his forefinger raised in warning
There are three temple tanks known as Amrita Pushkarini, Kaala Theertham and Markandeya Theertham. There is a separate shrine dedicated to Abhirami as it is in this temple that he sand Abhirami Anthathi in praise of the Goddess and there is also separate shrine for Markandeya. We could see many people conducting their 60th and 80th birtdays here .

Our next temple was keezaperumpalam which is the abode of Lord Kethu, who is supposed to ward off poverty, sorrow and pain. The Naganatha Swamy Temple in the village of Keezaperumpalam is dedicated to Lord Kethu, the shadow planet, and therefore, is also known as Kethu Sthalam(shrine and is one of the Navagraha temples. However, the primary deity is Naganatha Swamy or Lord Shiva. In this shrine, Lord Kethu is seen with head of a snake and body of an asura.

He appears in divine form, his head as five-headed snake and with folded hands worshipping Lord Shiva. Here Lord Kethu is in a separate Sannidhi. People arrange small stones outside this temple as a small stack in the belief that if they do this ,they can also construct their own houses.

We then proceeded towards Vaitheeswaran koil.Vaitheeswaran Koil or Pullirukkuvelur Temple is one of the nine Navagraha temples in Tamil Nadu and is associated with planet Mars or Angaraka or Sevvai, one of the Navagrahas. The main deity here is Lord Shiva as Vaidhyanathaswamy, Vaidhyanathaswamy, the Vaid or doctor, is a renowned healer.

His consort is Thaiyalnaayaki or Valambigai can be seen carrying the pot of Sanjeevi Thailam, the medicinal oil for all illnesses. Legend has it that Angaraka was suffering from leprosy and was cured by Lord Vaidhyanathaswamy. So it is strongly believed that a bath in the holy waters of Siddhamirtham tank just opposite ambal’s sanctum is said to have many medicinal properties and will cure all illness.
This pond is also known as Goksheera (cow milk) Theertham as the sacred cow Kamadhenu’s milk is believed to have flowed into this tank when she performed abhiskek to the Shiva lingam with her milk.
We bought Pepper, salt and Jaggery) to be offered in the Siddhamirtham Pond as it is believed to relieve us of all diseases.
There is a separate shrine for Planet Mars (Angaraka). Angaraka or Mangal (is worshipped with immense devotion to seek healing from illness. Devotees throng to Vaitheeswaran temple praying for relief from 'chevvai dosham' (mangal Dosha).
You will find many devotees lighting Ma Vilaku here in this temple.Lord Muruga, has a special place and shrine and is worshipped in Vaitheeswaran Koil as Selva Muthu Kumaraswamy.
Vaitheeswaran Koil is the nerve center for Naadi Josiyam, which is a a popular form of astrology.

vaiseeswaran temple
By the time we finished this temple we were hungry and decided to have our lunch at a nearby restaurant called Akshardam. The food was excellent and we ate to our hearts content.

Entrance of hotel Akshardham
We were thinking whether to return back to the hotel and then continue our second lap or whether we could visit one more temple before returning to the hotel, our driver suggested that we could visit Chidambaram which is about 25 Km.As I always wanted to visit the Nataraja temple we agreed to his suggestion and proceeded towards Chidambaram.
When we reached Chidambaram it was afternoon time and temple was closed. So we decided to wait for some time till it opens.
We spent some time walking the streets of Chidambaram and having some ice-cream at a ice-cream parlor. The temple opened at 4 Pm.
Chidambaram is one of the five holiest Shiva temples, each representing one of the five natural elements; Chidambaram represents akashaThe word Chidambaram might have been derived from chit, meaning consciousness, and ambaram, meaning sky.  It refers to the chidaakasam, the sky of consciousness.
It is amongst the few temples where Lord Shiva is portrayed in the deity form instead of the common Lingam
The story of Chidambaram begins with the legend of Lord Shiva strolling into the Thillai Vanam (vanam meaning a forest and Thillai is a type of trees)In the Thillai forests were a group saints who believed in the supremacy of magic and that God can be controlled by rituals.

The Lord strolled in the forest assuming the form of' Pitchatanadar. He is followed by his consort who is none other than Lord Vishnu as Mohini. The rishis and their wives are enchanted by the brilliance and the beauty of the On seeing their womenfolk totally enchanted , the saints get angry and invoke lot of serpants. The Lord however lifts the serpents and dons them as ornaments neck.. Further enraged, the saints invoke a tiger, which the Lord skins and wears as a shawl around his waist.

So totally frustrated the saints invoked a powerful demon Muyalakan with all their strength .Muyalakan is a symbol of complete arrogance and ignorance. The Lord steps on the demon's back, immobilizes him and performs the dance-Ánanda Thaandava.

Hearing this episode, Adishesha requested for a repeat performance. He sets up a Shivalinga and meditates upon it.Impressed by the prayers. Lord Shiva appeared before him and performed the dance in Chidambaram.

At the centre of the temple is situated the sanctum sanctorum called the Chit Sabha or Chit Ambalam. It is the main shrine where Lord Nataraja accompanied by his consort Parvathi performs the Cosmic Dance, the Ananda Thandava or Dance of Bliss.
The most imposing feature of Chidambaram Natraja temple, which can be seen soaring above the plain from miles away, is the four temple gopurams.
From Chidambaram we went to Kanchanur.Agniswarar Swami Temple at Kanchanur is one of the nine Navagraha Temples in Tamil Nadu and is associated with Lord Shukra (planet Venus).the sixth of the Navagraha planet
The main deity is Lord Shukra  Lord Shiva as Agnipureeswarar and Parvathy as Karpagambal. There is  no separate sannidhi for Sukkiran here as Shiva himself is believed to be incarnated as Sukkiran here. This temple has Goshala (cow shed)with 15 cows inside the temple It is fairly  large temple and people  pray here for happy marriage.
Next we moved to Suriyanar Kovil at Thirumangalakkudi. This temple is situated at about 16 km form Kumbakonam. This is the Navagraha temple for Lord Surya (Sun).
As per legend to this temple, Sage Kalava Muni was suffering from leprosy. He worshipped all the grahas (planets) begging for cure. All the nine grahas granted cure to this rishi. Lord Brahmma got because the planets were created to give the effects of good and evil according to the deeds of the individuals (karma) and they cannot grant any boons to a devotee directly. So Brahma cursed them to suffer from leprosy.

The planets came down to a jungle called Vellerukku vanam and performed penance towards Lord Shiva for relief. Lord Shiva appeared before them and said that henceforth they can have their own sthalas and can grace the devotees who worship them

The uniqueness about this temple is that the devotee can worship all the 9 planets as presiding deities in this temple. In other temples, the planets are generally considered as sub-deities. Each graha (planet) has their own shrine in this temple.
The presiding deity is the Sun God. Usha and Chayadevi are His consorts. Lord Sun graces. The Kol Theertha Vinayakar shrine is considered to be of importance in this temple. We picked up Ganpathy made of vella erukku form outside the temple.

ganpathy made of Vella erukku
We then proceeded to visit the last temple of the day at Thiruvidaimaruthur.
According to legend, Thiruvidaimaruthur Mahalingaswamy is the centre of all Siva temples in the region and the Saptha Vigraha moorthis (seven prime consorts in all Siva Temples) are located around the temple,in various parts of the state. The seven deities are Nataraja in Chidambaram, Chandikeswarar in Tirucheingalur, Swetha Vinayagar at Tiruvalanchuzhi, Swaminathan at Swamimalai, Bhairava at Sattainathar Temple, Navagraha at Sooriyanar Temple and Dakshinamoorthy at Apatsahayesvarar Temple, Alangudi.

Mahalingam here is Swayambu and is the presiding deity with his consort Brihatasundaragujambigai also known as Nanmulainayaki. The Siva Linga is also considered as Jothirlinga .Thiruvidaimaruthur is one of the three Siva temples in India which adopt Maruda as their Sthala vriksham (holy tree) and hence it is called as Idai Marudur .

The Ambal Shrine is one of the Sakthi Peetams and is on the right side of the main shrine. There is a separate shrine for Mookambiga Amman. There are stone images of Pattinathar and Bhadragiriyar in the eastern and western gateways of the temple respectively. There are five temple tanks inside the temple, namely Karunyamirdha Theertham, Soma Theertham, Kanaga Theertham, Kalyana Theertham and Iravatha Theertham.

Nandi at the temple

While on our way back, our dirver suggested that we see the Vittal Rukmini Temple at Govindapuram. As an afterthought it was a wonderful decision. It was indeed a very beautiful temple.

Sri Vittal Rukmini Sansthan is a temple built recently which has the idols of Krishna and his consort Rukmini. This is situated in Govindapuram near Kumbakonam. The temple is massive and really beautiful. There were no offerings to be made at this temple. We were told that this temple has been constructed by a classical singer jaikrishnan who had christened himself as Vithaldas.

It is a very peaceful serene temple and is built in a maharshtrian style. There are 2 huge statues welcoming you at the entrance. There is a prescribed entrance and exit route to monitor the crowd .The large doors at the entrance and the inside of the temple has intricate carvings. The best thing about this temple is that we can go very close to the deity and worship.

There is a Goshala in the backyard where more than 500 cattles of cows and bulls brought from Brindavan, dwaraka etc. We were also told that none of the cows were milked and the milk was only for the calves. Only on few occasions few cows were milked. The cow dung was used for gobar gas plant which was used to light the stable. We were really wonderstruck at the cleanliness. We met one lady who was from Chennai and was doing absolute voluntary services at the stable and her husband was taking care of temple activities voluntarily. We met many such people who were doing voluntary services.

After visiting such beautiful temples and learning a little about all temples we returned back to the hotel

Brihadeeswaran Temple or the Tanjore Periya Koil (Tanjore Big Temple) is temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. One of the biggest temples in south India, this imposing structure was built by Raja Raja Chola and his sister Kundavai, both ardent devotees of Lord Shiva. The main temple is entirely built of granite. More than 130,000 tons of granite is said to have been used to build it.It is impossible to even imagine how the stones must have been transported in those olden days.
Another stunning feat in this temple is the Vimana on top of the temple. The lotus shaped stone is supposed to weigh around 80 tons .So we have to marvel the engineering as to how such a heavy carved rock could have been hoisted at such a height
Facing the deity is a massive idol of Nandi (Bull) which is estimated to weigh 25 tons and is 3.6 meters tall. The Nandi is seated in a separate ‘NayakMandapam’ has some intricately done carvings. This Nandi is carved out of a single stone. The deity of Shiva Linga is 2.7 meters high and around seven meters in diameter. The temple also has statues of Ashtadikpalakas
It is certain that you will fall in love with the architecture which is in Dravidian style giving a peek into the mythological stories. Tanjore temple walls have several ornate paintings that depict the history of Chola dynasty and the greatness of Raja Raja Chola. The architecture was a mixture of Chola and Maratha and we were really surprised at the fact that Marathas had Come  so deeply into Tanjore.
The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Great Living Chola Temples.

The shiva lingas

our next stop was at Thiruvaiyaru to see the Aiyarappan temple
Aiyarappar Temple located at Thiruvaiyaru is at a walking distance from Thyagaraja’s sannidhi.
Thiruvaiyaru means 5 rivers around the city .The rivers are Arasilaaru, vennaru, Vetarru,Kudamurutiyaru and kaveriaaru. The temples built in a very huge area and has5prakarams.The temple is incarnated with hymns of Thevaram and is classified as padal petra Sthalam
The presiding deity here is panchanatheswarar (Ayirappan and panchanatheswarar both mean the same thing-Lord of five rivers). This temple is one of the very famous Shiva temples and is also known as Dakshina Kailasam.
The Story behind this temple is that Thirunavukarasar went on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash to have a darshan of Lord Shiva. However due to many hardships faced he could not complete the journey. Lord Shiva submerged him in a pond and when he emerged from the pond he saw that he was transported to Thiruvaiyaru where lord shiva gave him a darshan of Mount kailash. Hence the name Dakshina kailasam
Lord Shiva got Nandhi married in Thirumazapaadi near Thiruvaiyaru and took them around the seven abodes as sapthapathi .So this temple is one of the temple sin group of seven saptha sthaanam temples. The seven Saptha sthanam temples  are :
Thiruvaiyaru,Thirupazanam,Thiruchotruthurai,Thiruvedikudi,Thirukandiyur,Thirupoonthurithi,Thiruneithanam(thillaisthanam).Lord Shiva in this temple is swayambumoorthy an dit si believed that his long turf is spread throughout the place and hence circumbulation(pradakshinam) is not permitted in this temple.

Aiyarappa temple
After finishing seeing this beautiful temple we made our way to Thingalur which houses the navagraha temple dedicated to Lord Chandra.(Moon)
Thingalur has derived from the word Moon(Thingal) and Land(oor). The main Idol of this temple was Lord Shiva as Kailasanathar and Lord Parvathi as Periyanayagi Amman. The presiding deity of Kailasanathar is  in the form of a Lingam. The Moon god is located in a separate shrine in Kailasanathar Temple. Lord Chandra is said to be the grandson of Brahma, born to his son Athri and wife Anusuya. Chandra was cursed by one of his father in law to lose his beauty and glamour as he was more loving and biased towards one of his wives Rohini and neglected his other 27 wives. Chandra prayed to Lord Shiva and he restored his beauty saying that he will regain his figure slowly in a fortnight. But because of the curse he wanes every fifteen days. So it is believed that the waxing and waning of the Moon is due to this.

inside Thingaloor temple

Our next stop was Swamimalai ,one of the six sacred abodes( Aaru padai veedu) of Lord Muruga. Lord Muruga here is called Swaminatha Swami, meaning ‘The Teacher of Shiva’ as he is believed to have taught the Pranava Mantra to Shiva. Shiva was thus the student and Muruga the teacher. So for this reason Shiva’s shrine is at the foothill along with a shrine of Parvathi and Muruga is atop the hill. This temple has been built by the Cholas. After praying to Lord Shiva and Parvathi we have to walk up the steps to worship Lord Muruga. As the Lord was the Guru to his father this place si revered as Gurumalai Or Swamimalai.

Swamimalai temple
We now proceeded to see Shwetha Vinayagar at Thiruvalanchizi .

Vinayakar in Tamil means Lord Ganesha and shwetha Vinayakar means white coloured Ganesha. This temple is situated just about 6 Km near Kumbakonam in a village called Thiruvalanchuzi.the deity of lord Ganesh is white coloured. The story goes that the Devas forgot to pray to Lord Ganesh before starting the churn the Paarkadal(ksheera Sagaram). So they could get only poison .

They scooped out the white foam of the sea (kadal Nurai) and made a Ganesha figure. It is only after this that they could get Nector. So this Ganesha is also called as Nurai Pillaiyar (Foam Ganesha)

The ganesh idol here is small but the temple is huge. The next day was suppose to be Vinayakar Kalyanam and hence the temple was beautifully decorated with many Kolams(Rangolis)

The main deity here is kapardeeswarar.

The sixth temple for the day was Durga Temple at patteeswaram. The legend behind this temple is that Patti(daughter calf) of the sacred cow kamadhenu worshipped lord Shiva here.Lord shiva was so pleased with her worship that eh blessed her here and hence the name patteeswaram (named after patti).the presiding deity in this temple is dhyanapureeswarar and his consort Gnyanambikai.

Story goes that Lord Rama was absolved of his Chaya Hatti dosham( Lord Rama  had killed Ravana who was a great exponent in art and culture and also an ardent devotee of lord Shiva) when he installed a Shiva Linga here and worshipped the  lord. Hence this is also a Parihara Sthalam.
It is also believe that once Thirugnayana sambandhar came walking to Patteeswaram to worship Lord Shiva. But because of the scorching heat he was finding it difficult to walk in the sun .Lord Shiva ordered the bootha ganas to make a muthu pandal( tent made with pearls)along the way so that  Thirugnayana sambandhar could walk comfortably.
Also Lord shiva wanted to have a direct view of Thirugnayana sambandhar when he entered the temple and hence asked Nandhi to move to one side so that his view is not obstructed. This is the reason you will find that Nandi here is not exactly opposite the lord
Durga Devi here is shantha swarioopi meaning calm and peaceful. She is seen seated on a lion with her foot on Mahishasura. She is seen here with eight hands (ashtabhuja)

Hotel Raya's Grand
we took rest for some time and left for our further temple visits at about 4 PM.
Our first stop was at AlangudiAlangudi or Apatsahayesvarar Temple is one of the Navagraha temple dedicated to Lord Guru (Brihaspathi) or the planet. The term Guru means a person who destroys darkness or enlightens. Guru is a person who leads you from the darkness (ignorance) to light(knowledge). Like most other Navagraha temples, the main deity in the temple is Lord Shiva in the form of Aranyeswara or Apatsahayesvarar and is accompanied by His consort parvati ,depicted as Elavarkuzhali Ammai (Umayammai). Lord Dakshinamoorthy is appearing as Guru (one of the navagrahas). If we worship the Lord Guru (Planet Jupiter) here, the malefic effects of Lord Guru will be cured. It’s a mythological belief that, anybody having skin diseases will get cured if they take bath in the holy tank in the temple and worship the Lord.It is believed that it is in this place, lord Shiva drank the poison churned out by Devas and Asuras from the sea and saved the world from the poison So the Lord here is called as Abath Sagayeswarar. And this place also called as Alangudi (poison means Alam in tamil).

We did our poojas and had a very good darshan. We then went to Nachiyar Koil .Nachiyar temple or Thirunarayoor Nambi temple is housed at Thirunarayoor a village in the outskirts of Kumbakonam. The architecture is Dravidian style.
This is the fourteenth of among the 108 dhivya desams. The presiding deity is Lord Srinivasa and his consort vanjulavalli Thayar. The lord and the Goddess are is the same sanctum .They are seen here in wedding pose. This temple is also known as Nachiyar koil or nachiyar temple. Vanjulavalli Thayar or Nachiyar as she is called is given more prominence in this temple. In fact she is so placed that you can have her darshan right from the entrance.

It is believed that a hermit called Medhavi observed rigorous penance on the banks of the Manimuthu River to have Goddess Lakshmi as his daughter. True to his prayer and penance he found beautiful girl child on a Friday of Panguni Month (Tamil calendar), on the auspicious day of Uthiram Star, under the Vanjula Tree. That is how she gets the name Vanjulavalli

Kal Garudan (Garuda made of Stone) is the vahana of the presiding deity of this temple. In most temples Garuda is made of either gold or silver but in this temple it is made of stone. We were told by the priest that The Kal garudan is famous for a very strange phenomenon. It seems that the weight of Kal Garudan grows exponentially when moved away from the sanctum, During Garuda Sevai, the number of people required to carry Garuda through each of the five prakarams of the temple keeps doubling from 4 to 128 people. Again while coming inside the temple, the weight keeps decreasing and the of persons carrying keeps reducing to final 4 who carry it into the sannidhi.
we did archana for all family members and had excellent darshan .

Kal Garudan

our next temple was Uppiliappan temple.

Uppiliappan is a temple dedicated to lord Vishnu situated near Thirunageswaram. It is one of the divya desams of Vaishnavaites.

The presiding deity is Lord Uppiliappan who is seen in a standing position. The deity is magnificent and very similar to Lord Balaji in thirupathy. His consort is Bhoomadevi. The legend associated with this temple is that markandeya wanted Lakshmi to be born as his daughter and that Lord himself should be his son in law. So he did penance for many years and Lakshmi appeared as his daughter under Tulsi tree.
When the girl reached adolescent age, Lord Vishnu appeared as a man and asked for her hand. To this markandeya replied that his daughter was too young and did not even know to cook with proper salt. To this man replied that he was ready to take her as his wife and is willing to eat food without salt.

That is when markandeya realized that the man was none other than Lord Vishnu himself and his joy knew no bounds. He performed the kannikadhanam of his daughter and conducted the marriage. So we also find markandeya maharishi in this temple along with Upiliappan and bhoomadevi

Also as Lord had promised that he would never leave his daughter, the utsava deity Lord Uppiliappan is never taken out of the temple without his consort

Since the lord had said that he was willing to take food without salt, the prasadam/neivedyam (offering) in this temple is cooked without any salt
The temple has five tiered Raja Gopuram and the idol of the lord is 8 feet tall. The architecture is Dravidian style.A must visit temple

Our next stop was Thirunageswaram which houses the Navagrah temple for Lord Rahu. This temple enshrines the famous Lord Rahu, the snake god – both feared and revered by people all over. Sri Naganathaswamy temple or Rahu Sthalam is one of the nine navagraha temple in Tamil Nadu.It is associated
with Lord Rahu ( Rahu Bagawan). The main presiding deity is Shiva in the form of Lord naganathaswamy and his Consort Giri Gujambika(goddess parvathi)

A unique feature of this temple is that Rahu Baghawan is seen with a human Face. Normally in other places Lord Rahu is seen with serpent’s face. Astrologers believe that doing Milk Abhishek to Lord Rahu on Sundays during Rahu kala removes many malefic effects
Thiru Nageswaram
the next place that our drive took us was Aiyyawadi.
The temple of Maha Prathyangiri Devi is situated in a small village called Ayyavadi .Originally this village was called as Aivar Padi.According to legends the five Pandavas visited this temple, kept their weapons under a tree and worshipped the Prathyangiri Devi. As 5 Pandavas visited, the name Aivar padai which later changed to Aiyyavadi.
In this temple regular homams are conducted every full moon day. It is believe that worshipping Devi will take away evil forces and all problems. When we visited there was homam going on and we could see few parsi couples.we were quite surprised but Perhaps this temple is well known.

Next and final stop for the day was Thirubhuvanam which houses the Kampheshwara temple.

Kampaheshwara temple is a hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.the main deity here is lord Kampaheswara and his consort goddess Parvathi.

The god is supposed to have relieved a king varguna Pandiya who was haunted by evil spirits from Kampha (shaking/trembling) and hence the name Kampaheshwara. There is a seperate shrine for sarabeswarar a fusion of man eagle and lion. The deity is believed to have saved the devas from the fury of Narasimha after he slayed Hiranyakashibu.

The architecture of this temple is very similar to Brihadiswara temple. The extremely high vimana is truly eye capturing.
